ACL Preview 96 – Gillian Welch July 21, 2008

A little more country for ya. This one has a bit of a folk influence to it as well. Like I’ve said many times before about many different artists: it’s decent, but nothing special.

Formed by two guys at North Texas, the Eli Young Band has a country-tinged blend of alt-rock a la Counting Crows and the like. It’s okay for what it is, but it’s not brilliant.
ACL Preview 94 – The Black Keys July 19, 2008

The Black Keys are good, but they’ve never really amazed me. That may be because the two person setup just doesn’t allow enough variation, and everything runs the risk of being too repetitive (the White Stripes are an exception). The Keys’ newest album Attack and Release, produced by the awesome Danger Mouse, sounds full, it sounds complete, and it friggin’ rocks. These guys are a must to check out at this year’s festival. Below is my favorite song from the album, “Oceans and Streams.”
ACL Preview 93 – Against Me! July 18, 2008

Eh. Punk rock has always annoyed me, mainly because the so-called ‘anger’ inherent in its creation often seems contrite and forced. Against Me! isn’t really anything different. I suppose that they’re good at what they do, but they’re nothing to write home about.
ACL Preview 92 – Jakob Dylan and the Gold Mountain Rebels July 17, 2008

Jakob Dylan – yes, he’s Bob’s son – has one immediate advantage Dad was always searching for: he sings better. Although he’ll never be viewed with as much reverence as Bob, mainly because it’s not the right place or time for folk to change the world, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t good. He’s very good in fact. Listen.
ACL Preview 91 – Okkervil River July 16, 2008

The vocalist for Okkervil River has always reminded me of Nick Cave, and I’m certainly okay with that. The overall product of the band is a bit too emoish indie-rock for my liking, but it’s not bad. The recently released “Golden Opportunities” mixtape is great.

I always love it when the names of bands reflect the music they perform, and Galactic is most definitely an example of that. An organic blend of funky hip-hop and post-rock idealism, Galactic is a force to be reckoned with.

I cannot stand country music, so I’m gonna refrain from posting very many comments here, because if I do, it’ll inevitably turn into a constant stream of jokes and/or insults. Just watch for yourself.

Nice rhythm based soul-funk group here. Not really my cup of tea, but they’re good at what they do.
ACL Preview 87 – Hot Chip July 8, 2008

I’ve always been intrigued by Hot Chip, and although I can only really listen to their stuff in small doses, it’s still fun to get coked up on and have a rave to. You know, if I did that sort of thing.
