This week was pretty horrible for new music (unless you’re a Raven-Symone fan or think that Madonna can still be relevant), but there was one good album in the form of Australia-based duo The Presets.

The group creates a sound similar to what you’d expect from groups like Daft Punk with a bit of extra disco thrown in for good measure. Their newest album, Apocalypso, is a freaking fun dance disc full of phat beats and hefty electronica to make sure your party keeps rocking all night. Plus, singer Julian Hamilton sounds like an awesome mix of Depeche Mode’s David Gahan and Brandon Flowers of The Killers. Watch the video for “My People” and get a link for another below.

I’m neck deep in studying, so just watch the video and decide for yourself what you think about our next artist, Bonnie Bishop. She’s a little bit country, I’m a little bit rock and roll.

She has a great voice though.

Yeah, you know that headline caught your eye. Maynard James Keenan (TOOL, A PERFECT CIRCLE, PUSCIFER) talked to Suicide Girls about the new Puscifer album that was released today titled “V is for Viagra: the Vagina Remixes” which basically consists of the songs from the first Puscifer album remixed by Paul Barker (MINISTRY), Lustmord, Michael Patterson, Aaron Turner (ISIS), Danny Lohner (NINE INCH NAILS), and Dave Ogilvie (SKINNY PUPPY), among others.

It’s a bit of an awkward interview, but Maynard’s always been an awkward guy. I never cease to be amazed at how he looks completely different every time I see him. There’s no denying that the man’s a genius though.

ACL Preview 17 – Ben Sollee April 29, 2008

Really interesting artist today. Ben Sollee is a classically trained cellist who decided to go the singer/songwriter slash indie route with his music. What results is a pretty unique sound. The song below is “A Change is Gonna Come” and the stuttering cello line that provides the rhythmic backing is really freaking awesome. Definitely one of my favorite artists we’ve run across thus far in our journey through the ACL lineup.

Also, if someone can please figure out who he sounds like when he sings, let me know, because it’s on right on the tip of my tongue, but I cannot figure it out, and it’s driving me crazy.

As part of Chuck Palahniuk’s continuing viral marketing leading up to his new novel Snuff, part three of the interview he conducted with the “star” of the novel – porn legend Cassie Wright – is now up.

My favorite line from the video: “Cassie Wright: goddess, mother, drug addict, slut.” Oh Chuck.

Speaking of, for those you of you in the ATX, Chuck will be doing a reading and signing on June 5 at an offsite address for Bookpeople. For those of you not in the ATX, view the rest of the tour dates here

Roger Waters’ Pig can be a real cash cow April 29, 2008

The pig that floated away into the night sky during Roger Waters’ set at Coachella Sunday last night apparently wasn’t supposed to get away. It did though, and as it was drifting up into the heavens, Waters reportedly said sadly, “That’s my pig.”

Coachella organizers want to help him get it back though, as they’re offering a $10,000 reward and four Coachella tickets for life to whoever gets the pig back to them and then to Waters. We’re a long ways here in Texas, but if you run across it, shoot an e-mail to lostpig@coachella.com and enjoy your free tix. John, tell Julianna to be on the lookout up there in California.

So apparently on May 23 The Shins will be featured on a Nick Jr. show called Yo Gabba Gabba. But also apparently, video of the performance has been circulating for quite a while now. I’ve just now run across it, and it’s a tad disconcerting to see the guys famous for “New Slang” singing in a cardboard forest a song that has pretty much the most repetitive lyrics ever created. Nonetheless, it’s at least interesting, so check out the band performing “It’s Okay, Try Again” at Videogum.

Alright, I think we are out of the woods regarding the kids musicians and the gospel groups. Not that there’s anything wrong with either of those types of artists, but it’s not my cup of tea. Although Big Don’s Humpty Dumpty is a freaking great song.

Up next is Ben Cyllus, an acoustic-driven singer/songwriter. The song featured below is “Traffic,” and it’s a nice Ryan Adams-esque ballad. It’s not revolutionary, but I do thoroughly enjoy the tune. Also, I couldn’t get the track off the site to use in the YouTube vid, but you NEED to go to his MySpace and listen to “Cry Later,” as it’s a great tune.

Ayo Technology has awful lyrics, this proves it April 28, 2008

I accidentally ran across this on YouTube this morning. It’s an acoustic cover of 50 Cent’s “Ayo Technology” as performed by some dude named Milow. It has a great singer-songwriter/indie feel to it, but by toning it down and playing it as such it does nothing but showcase just how awful the lyrics in this song really are. Nevertheless, it’s an interesting clip. Check it out below.
